Book of Ra

Book of Ra is Novomatic's Egyptian adventure slot, played across five reels and nine paylines. An explorer hunts for the Book of Ra itself, a symbol that acts as both wild and scatter and unlocks the free spins round the game is known for. It arrived in arcades and land based venues long before it reached the web, and it created the template that an entire genre of slots still follows.

At Shuffle you can play Book of Ra in demo mode for free or with a real balance, on desktop, tablet or phone. Nothing needs to be installed.

What Is Book of Ra?

Released by Novomatic, Book of Ra became one of the most played slot titles ever made, first in land based cabinets across Europe and later online. Its design is deliberately spare: five reels, up to nine selectable paylines, a single special symbol and one bonus feature. There are no cascades, no ways to win engine and no side games.

That simplicity is the reason it defined the "book slot" genre. A single book symbol serving as both wild and scatter, combined with free spins that select one expanding symbol at random, turned out to be a formula that scaled. Dozens of studios have since built their own version of it.

Book of Ra RTP, Volatility and Maths

The theoretical return to player (RTP) of the original Book of Ra is 92.13%. RTP describes the percentage of total wagers a slot returns over millions of spins. It is a long run average and not a session forecast: across an evening you may see far more or far less, and neither outcome contradicts the figure.

By current standards 92.13% is low. Most modern slots run between 94% and 97%, and the gap is a genuine cost. It reflects the game's age rather than any adjustment by Shuffle, which does not modify the RTP of any supplied title. Book of Ra Deluxe, the later revision, runs at approximately 95.1% and is the better maths of the two.

Volatility is high. Wins arrive infrequently, and the meaningful ones come almost exclusively from the free spins round when the expanding symbol cooperates. A session can run a long way without a substantial return, and that is normal behaviour for this game rather than a sign of anything. Every spin is independent and chance based: no bet size, timing, or pattern changes the odds.

Stakes are set by choosing a bet per line and the number of active lines, up to nine. Your actual outlay per spin is the two multiplied together, which is worth checking before you start rather than after.

How to Play Book of Ra

• Open Book of Ra at Shuffle and choose demo or real play.

• Set your bet per line and the number of active paylines, up to nine.

• Press spin. Wins pay left to right on active lines, starting from the leftmost reel.

Only active lines pay. Reducing the line count lowers your stake per spin and also lowers the number of ways a win can land, so the two move together rather than one being a saving on the other.

Book of Ra Symbols and Payouts

The Explorer is the top paying symbol, followed by the golden Pharaoh mask, then the scarab and the Statue of Ra. Card royals, the ace, king, queen, jack and ten, fill out the lower end of the table.

The Book of Ra symbol does two jobs at once. It substitutes for every other symbol as a wild, and it pays as a scatter from anywhere on the reels rather than needing to sit on an active line. Three or more anywhere in view trigger the free spins round.

How Do Free Spins Work in Book of Ra?

Landing three or more Book symbols awards ten free spins. Before they begin, the game selects one of the regular symbols at random and promotes it to a special expanding symbol for the duration of the round.

During the free spins, whenever that chosen symbol appears it expands to fill its entire reel and pays across all active lines, regardless of whether the positions would normally form a winning combination. This is where the game's largest outcomes come from, and it is why the symbol selected matters enormously. An expanding Explorer pays very differently from an expanding ten.

Further Book symbols landing during the round retrigger another ten free spins, and retriggers can chain. The expanding symbol stays the same throughout.

The Gamble Feature

After any winning spin you can gamble the amount. The screen shows a face down card and you call red or black. Call correctly and the win doubles; call wrong and it is lost entirely.

It is a straight coin flip with no skill component and no memory of previous cards. Used repeatedly it is the fastest way to turn a good session into a blank one. Where the gamble ladder allows several rounds, each one is the same fifty-fifty proposition applied to a larger sum.

Play Book of Ra Free in Demo Mode

Book of Ra can be played in demo at Shuffle with no deposit. The demo runs the same reels, the same paytable, the same 92.13% RTP and the same high volatility as real play. The only difference is the balance, which is play money and cannot be withdrawn.

Demo is the sensible way to see how often the free spins round actually triggers on a high volatility game before committing a bankroll to it. What it will not do is indicate how a real session will go. Because each spin resolves independently, a demo run that triggered the feature three times in twenty spins carries no information about the next twenty.

Book of Ra Compared With Book of Ra Deluxe

Deluxe is the later revision and differs in three ways that matter.

The feature works the same way in both. If you are choosing purely on maths, Book of Ra Deluxe returns roughly three percentage points more over the long run, which is a meaningful gap. The original is worth playing if you specifically want the classic version.

Other Book Style Slots at Shuffle

Book of Ra created a genre, and Shuffle's online slots library carries a good deal of it. The shared mechanic is always the same: one symbol acting as wild and scatter, free spins with a randomly selected expanding symbol, and high volatility.

If you enjoy the format, look for other Egyptian themed titles and modern book slots from studios such as Pragmatic Play and Hacksaw Gaming. Most of them run higher RTPs than the original Book of Ra while keeping the mechanic intact, so the genre is one of the few where the newer games are usually the better value. Check the RTP on each game page before choosing.

Promotions

Slot play including Book of Ra counts toward the weekly race and toward VIP progression, and slots carry the highest contribution rate toward bonus wagering requirements. Free spin drops and challenges periodically attach to specific titles, so check the promotions page for anything currently running on Novomatic games. As of September 2026 the promotional calendar refreshes weekly.

Responsible Gambling

You must be 18 or older, or the legal age in your jurisdiction, to play. Book of Ra is high volatility, which means long stretches without a return are part of its normal behaviour. That combination, a low RTP and long dry spells, makes it a game where chasing is a particular risk.

Set a session budget before you start and treat it as spent. Gambling limites, self exclusion, & other resources are available in your account settings and take effect immediately. Please play responsibly; visit the responsible gambling policy page for more details.

Licensing and Fair Play

Shuffle operates under a Curaçao Gaming Control Board license (OGL/2024/1337/0628) and is operated by Natural Nine B.V. Book of Ra runs on Novomatic's own certified random number generator, and Shuffle does not modify its RTP, volatility or paytable. The game you play here is the game Novomatic built.
